Nestled in Baja California, Mexico, Valle de Guadalupe is a hidden gem that has been quickly gaining international fame. Known as the “Napa Valley of Mexico,” this enchanting wine region has become a hotspot for travelers, particularly those from the United States. With its beautiful landscapes, boutique wineries, and amazing cuisine, it’s no wonder road trippers from California are flocking here.

Valle de Guadalupe has become one of my favorite destinations to road trip to. I love coming back to see what is new and visit new restaurants and wineries, as well as some of my favorite places. Here is my guide to visiting Valle de Guadalupe, from where to stay, eat, best wineries, activities, and beyond in Mexico wine country!

Valle de Guadalupe Travel Guide: Best Things to Do

This blog is a travel guide that covers how to get to Valle de Guadalupe, some of the best wineries, things to do, where to stay, tips, and more.

How to Get to Valle de Guadalupe

There are a few options depending on where you’re starting your trip from as well as driving tips and information about hiring a driver.

Flying – What’s the Closest Airport to Valle de Guadalupe

Tijuana Airport (TIJ): The Tijuana Airport is the closest option if you’re flying in. Tijuana to Valle de Guadalupe is about a 1.5-hour drive.

San Diego Airport (SAN): Alternatively, you can fly into San Diego and drive down. The drive from San Diego to Valle de Guadalupe takes approximately 2 hours.

San Ysidro Border Crossing

If you are driving from San Diego you will likely be crossing the San Ysidro Border. However, there are two other main ports of entry: Otay Mesa and Tecate. More details are noted below.

Drive your vehicle

Driving your own vehicle is a great way to get to Valle de Guadalupe if you’re already in the Southern California area. Be sure to get car insurance that covers you in Mexico. I recommend Baja Bound. I’ve been using them for years and you can get a policy in minutes online.

Hire a driver or join a Valle de Guadalupe tour

If you’re looking for transportation to Valle de Guadalupe some companies meet you at the border to take you there. If you’re looking for Valle de Guadalupe wine tours check out this Valle de Guadalupe day tour that will pick you up after you cross the San Ysidrio border upon entering Mexico. Or if you’re traveling as a group opt to have a private day tour.

However, if you’re not looking for a day tour you can hire a driver for transportation between Tijuana and Valle de Guadalupe

Taking the ABC Bus

If you’re looking for a bus to Valle de Guadalupe there is a bus from Tijuana to Ensenada. However, there is not a Valle de Guadalupe bus and you’ll either need to arrange for a driver to pick you up from Ensenada or rent a car. This is an option if you’re using Esenada as your base which is a good option if you’re looking for a day or two of wineries and spending more of your time in Esenada.

Things to know about driving across the border

San Ysidro: San Ysidro is the busiest land border crossing in the world, connecting San Diego, CA, with Tijuana, Mexico. You can expect long wait times, especially during weekends and holidays. It’s recommended to check the current border wait times before you head out.

If you have Global Entry, you can use the SENTRI lanes to expedite your return to the U.S.

Otay Mesa: Otay Mesa is another major crossing point, located east of San Ysidro. It’s a bit less crowded than San Ysidro so check the current border wait times before you’re heading to the area to decide which route is best for you. There are also SENTRI lanes available at this crossing.

Tecate: Tecate is a smaller and less busy crossing located to the east of Tijuana. It’s a more direct route into the valley and is a more relaxed border crossing experience.

Best Time to Visit

Valle de Guadalupe is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is during the harvest season, from August to October. The weather is from late September to October, and starts to cool down making it ideal. Numerous wine festivals and events are happening during this time.

You do need a reservation for their cellar tour however they do offer a more informal tasting at their tasting room and store. There is also a permanent food truck outside serving up delicious tapas.

Do note that most wineries open around 11 am and close by 4 or 5 pm. Few are open all week with most closing on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, or both days.

Tips:

Here are some helpful tips to make your trip smoother.

Planning/Reservations

It’s important to make reservations in advance as most of the wineries need your name to drive onto the property. Security will ask for your name and, commonly, they might jot down your license plate information.

Some of the stand-alone restaurants (the ones that aren’t located on the same property as a hotel or vineyard) don’t require reservations.

Money: Cash or Credit Card?

Most wineries, restaurants, and hotels accept credit cards. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. Some smaller restaurants are cash-only and the toll roads are cash-only as well. It’s important to have some cash on you. American dollars are widely accepted but you are likely to need smaller bills. Carry singles and five-dollar bills for petty cash. This is helpful for tolls, tipping, and a meal at the taqueria.

Navigating Baja Tips:

  • Check the border wait times.
  • Have all necessary documents, including passports and vehicle registration.
  • Get car insurance from Baja Bound, if driving.
  • Be prepared for dirt roads and look out for potholes and speed bumps. Speed bumps aren’t always clearly marked or there may not be a sign.
